Edward Warren Mehrtens, 31, died Thursday, March 8, 2013, at his home in Gainesville, Fla. Born Aug. 4, 1982, he was a native of St. Bernard Parish, but spent much of his childhood gardening, and playing many sports like soccer and baseball in Chattanooga, Tenn. with his grandparents. There he also learned to fish, which became his favorite pastime. He returned to St. Bernard and attended Chalmette High School and Chalmette Community College. He then joined the U.S. Army and graduated from Fort Benning, Ga. as an infantryman. He was stationed in Seattle for some time following graduation.

He is survived by his parents, Betty Rose Warren Mehrtens of Mt. Hermon, and Ronald K. Mehrtens Jr. of New Orleans; a brother, Ronald K. III (Amy) Mehrtens of Charlottesville, Va.; a nephew, James McNally Mehrtens; four aunts, Billie W. McDonald, Nancy W. Budde, Debbie W. Tackett and Debra Ann Mehrtens; five uncles, Wilton B. “Sonny” Warren Jr., Richard Alton Warren, Jimmy C. Warren, Toby Karl Warren and Stephen Mehrtens; and numerous cousins and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Wilton B. Warren Sr. and Velma Smith Warren, and Ronald K. Mehrtens Sr.; an aunt, Iris Geraldine Warren Boyce; and uncles, Shelby Lee Warren, Tommy Glynn Warren and Gary Allen Warren.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 14 at Stony Point Missionary Baptist Church, 37030 Louisiana Highway 10 in Franklinton from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral service at 2 p.m., with Eld. Donnie Broome officiating. Burial will follow in the Roseland/Arcola cemetery.
