John Earl Harwell

HARWELL

John Earl Harwell, 92, a resident of Tyler, Texas, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, after a lengthy illness.

He was born in Bogalusa on Aug. 5, 1920, graduating from Bogalusa High School and continuing on to receive a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Mississippi. He married his wife, Helon, on Aug. 23, 1953.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. In 1985 he retired from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux after 18 years as a professor of psychology.

Dr. Harwell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helon Marie Baldwin; his sister-in-law, Fannie Caid; nieces and nephews, Lanelle and Joseph Picarella of Tyler, Jeff and Cindy Caid of Tyler, Jean and Bill Cole of Lawrenceville, Ga., Chauncey Young Jr. of Lawrenceville, J.D. and Linda Smith of Slidell, Terry Harwell, Kerry Earl Harwell and Cheryl Ann Harwell; and many great nieces and nephews.

Dr. Harwell was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Harwell and Sarah Jane “Sadie” Harwell; his brothers, J.D. Harwell and Burl Harwell; and sisters, Grace Harwell Young and Ella Lee Harwell Smith.

A graveside service was held Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Cemetery in Center, Texas. His nephew, Jeff C. Caid, spoke at the graveside service.

Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center was in charge of arrangements.
