Minister Sidney Stevens Jr., 60, went to rest in the arms of the Lord on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

He was born to the union of the late Sidney and Olivia Lewis Stevens Sr., and was baptized and worked faithfully as a member of the Isrealite Baptist Church of Independence, where he later became associate pastor. He was united in holy matrimony on Aug. 17, 1996, to Glenda Adell Young Stevens.

A 1970 graduate of Burgher High School in Independence, he had a love of sports and played on his high school varsity football team. After graduation, he attended Southern University in Baton Rouge, earning a Bachelors of Science degree in accounting in 1976, and continued post-graduate studies at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond.

He enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces and served in Viet Nam. He was employed by the Tangipahoa School System until his health declined. Later, residing in Bogalusa, he united with Bethlehem Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Aaron J. Thompson Sr. He was a member of the Livingston Masonic Lodge 160.

He leaves cherished memories with his wife, Glenda Young Stevens of Bogalusa; his daughter, Stephanie Catherine-Olevia Stevens; a stepson, Glennis MeKelphin Jr. of Bogalusa; two brothers, Gean Stevens of Independence and Milton L. (Vergie) Stevenson of Kenner; two sisters, Patricia S. Jackson and Elaine Stevens of New Orleans; a brother-in-law, Sidney (Barnia) Young of Downingtown, Penn.; sisters-in-Iaw, Jenet (Adam) Patterson and Orseola Young of Bogalusa; an aunt, Janie Robertson Johnson of Oakland, Calif.; godchildren,

Sabena Stevenson and Brad Hills; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Olivia Stevens; brothers, Jimmy Anderson, Phillip Stevens and Craig Stevens; mother- and father-in-law, Sidney and Catherine Young; and brother-in-law, Rev. Jerry S. Young.

Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 15, at Cook-Richmond Funeral Home from 2-5 p.m. Viewing will be on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time for the funeral services at noon at Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Bogalusa, with Elder Christopher D. Matthews Sr., pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church, and Rev. Larry Magee, pastor of Israelite Baptist Church in Independence, officiating. Interment will follow in Big Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Roseland.
