Even though the Bogalusa City Council will not take action on the issue during its meeting Tuesday, it will introduce a redistricting plan and public comment will be welcome, said Councilwoman Oneita Graham.

“We will be introducing Plan B which was recommended by the Washington Parish Election Commission as the most pleasing to the Department of Justice,” she said. “There is not a lot of change, but there is some. We would welcome the people’s participation, questions, opinions and comments.”

The reapportionment of council districts is required within one year after every 10-year census if population shifts affect fair representation.

Bogalusa lost population in all districts and the racial mix was affected.

The council has until the end of this year to have a new plan approved by the state and the Justice Department.

On Tuesday, the public will be able to see the recommended plan and the current district breakdown for comparison.

“It’s just introduction, but we encourage people to come and say what they think,” Graham said.

The public hearing and action on the matter could take place as early as Aug. 21.

The meetings are held in the courtroom at City Hall and start at 5:30 p.m.
