A Mississippi man who was hauling an 18-wheeler full of clay to the bridge construction site on Louisiana Highway 10 just east of Lake Vista in Bogalusa on Wednesday morning came within yards of his destination but didn’t quite make it.

Checks run at the scene showed no indication that James Powell, 32, of Picayune, was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when he ended up overturned in the ditch on the south side of the highway, said Bogalusa Police Chief Joe Culpepper. For some reason, he just wasn’t paying attention.

“He was inattentive and crossed the center lane,” Culpepper said. “He over-corrected and rolled his truck into the ditch.”

Powell managed to crawl out of the vehicle unhurt. He was cited with reckless operation of a vehicle.

The accident, which took place at approximately 9 a.m., held up traffic along the Louisiana/Mississippi artery for more than 90 minutes while the scene was secured and cleared.
