A Franklinton police officer that was involved in a shooting incident early Sunday morning that left one person dead has been placed on administrative leave with pay, as is department policy, according to Captain Justin Brown.

Phillip Morris Garrett was fatally shot at approximately 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1000 block of Easterhill Drive after several break-in-attempts in the neighborhood, Brown said. An officer initially used a less-than-lethal Tazer device in an attempt to subdue the suspect but it had no effect, Brown said.

He said Garrett then knocked the officer to the ground. Brown said the officer acted in self-defense.
