Mizell wins state Senate race, Edwards new governor

Republican Beth Mizell won the race for State Senate, District 12, on Saturday night, defeating Democratic challenger Mickey Murphy.

Mizell finished with 19,404 votes in the district, or 58 percent. Murphy had 14,033 votes, or 42 percent.

Mizell replaces State Sen. Ben Nevers, a Democrat who was unable to run again due to term limits. Mizell also won among Washington Parish voters, 51 percent to 49 percent.

In the race for District 7 in the Washington Parish Council, independent challenger David Anthony defeated incumbent Aubrey Posey, a Democrat. Anthony finished with 979 votes to Posey’s 918.

In other noteworthy statewide races, Democratic State Rep. John Bel Edwards defeated Republican U.S. Sen. David Vitter in the governor’s race. Republican Billy Nungesser topped Democrat Kip Holden in the lieutenant governor’s race, and Republican challenger Jeff Landry defeated Republican incumbent Buddy Caldwell in the race for attorney general.
