The Bogalusa Branch Library is set to observe Constitution Week from September 17-23. The library will showcase information about the history and significance of the U.S. Constitution.

One of the activities planned is the Preamble Scavenger Hunt. Participants who complete the hunt will be entered into a drawing for prizes sponsored by the Bogalusa chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Constitution Week was established to highlight the U.S. Constitution and its role in American history. It was officially recognized by Congress in 1956 after a petition from the DAR. The DAR also established DAR Constitution Hall, a performing arts center, in 1929 to honor the Constitution.

The goals of Constitution Week include:

  • Emphasizing the responsibilities of citizens to protect and defend the Constitution.
  • Informing the public about the Constitution’s role in American heritage and governance.
  • Encouraging the study of the events leading to the Constitution’s creation in September 1787.

Public participation is encouraged by signing the Constitution Week Proclamation Pledge and seeking proclamations from local officials. The week will also feature the Bells Across America event, where bells will be rung at 4 p.m. on September 17 to mark the signing of the Constitution in 1787.
