Washington Parish has sent three delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a milestone for such a small Parish. Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Truong, Secretary of Washington Parish Democratic Party Lynette Bech, and Executive Committee member Guy Leland were selected to attend the event which will officially nominate candidates for the upcoming presidential election.
Traditionally, the convention meets in the months leading up to the election to take a formal vote on who the party will support for the office of the presidency. This year, the party opted to conduct a virtual roll call in early August, stating that this was done to avoid potential ballot access issues in Ohio.
The convention is still expected to make a ceremonial roll call, and the event is an opportunity for party members to show their support for Harris and her chosen Vice President, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Louisiana sent 57 delegates to the convention, and was one of the first states to rally behind Harris and Walz when current president Joe Biden elected not to run as an incumbent in November after party members began questioning his health and advanced age.
