Throughout the school year, students at Thomas Elementary engaged in a variety of different activities, games, and discussions through the Heart Smart program. The program was coordinated at Thomas Elementary by the Physical Education department, in partnership with the school nurse, cafeteria manager, and guidance counselor, along with other TES staff members. The games and activities were performed in stations placed throughout the auditorium, with various levels of intensity. These stations included bowling, hula hooping, balancing and calisthenics, an exercise parachute, a racing station, and a jump rope station, among other activities. Students also played a variety of outdoor games throughout the year, including kickball and baseball. The materials and equipment used in the activities were purchased through funds given by the Heart Smart program to Thomas Elementary School for its implementation. Students were so motivated by the healthy lifestyle discussions that took place that they started buying water and other healthy alternatives at the Snack Shack for recess! They also competed against each other in various Heart Smart related contests throughout the school year. As the school year concludes, Thomas Elementary looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Heart Smart Program in the future.
