Franklinton’s baseball season came to an end over the weekend with a 2 games to 1 loss to Assumption on the road in the regional round of the Division II non-select playoffs.
The teams played two games on Friday and one on Saturday
Franklinton was defeated in the first game, 12-0, in five innings.
Micah Wascom, Dillon Pace and Tryson Fowler all had one hit.
Franklinton won game 2, 4-0 behind a complete-game shutout by Pace.
Pace allowed six hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Wascom hit a three-run homer.
Cade Phillips singled and drove in a run.
Rickken Burkhalter singled and drove in a run.
Elisha Hart doubled.
Will Turner singled.
Fowler scored a run.
On Saturday, Franklinton was defeated 10-0 in five innings.
Hart, Banyan Penton, Phillips and Fowler all singled.
Saturday’s loss marked the end of an era, as it was the final game for longtime Franklinton coach Jeff Tageant, who retires after being the Demons head coach for the last 36 years.
“It was a little emotional being that it was close to 900 games in my career and it came to an abrupt end. It hasn’t hit me yet, but the future will get me more emotional than the present that happened Saturday,” Tageant said. “It was special to have my family there. Evan (Tageant’s son) was there with his wife and Toni (Tageant’s wife) was there and Clay (Tageant’s son) was coaching, but his wife and my granddaughter were there.”
Tageant had a 565-317-2 career record.
“I’ve always preached to my kids to leave it better than you found it and I think I have left it better than I found it when I got it in fall of 1988,” Tageant said. “A lot of families have come through. There’s been a lot of relationships and I’ve watched a lot of young men grow up and I’ve coached a lot of players and then coached their kids.”
Franklinton had seven seniors this year, including Fowler, Pace, Penton, Phillips, Brady Smith, Dylan Stafford and Turner.
“They worked hard,” Tageant said. “They were a great group to be around. All seven had a substantial contribution to our success this season.”
No. 19 Franklinton posted a 15-17 record this season.
No. 3 Assumption (22-10) will play against sixth-seeded North DeSoto (26-8) in the quarterfinals in a best-of-3.
