Varnado’s Washington headed to state meet

Varnado’s Zamoriyon Washington is headed to the state track/field meet.

Washington came in third place in the 100 meters with a time of 11.14 at the Region 3-1A Meet on Monday at Ponchatoula. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Harlem Berry won in 10.86.

The top three from each event made it to state. The Class 1A state meet is May 4 at Bernie Moore Track Stadium on the campus of LSU.

In order to compete in regionals, athletes had to come in the top four of their event in the district meet.

Varnado is the only school from Washington Parish in Region 3-1A.

Washington came in fourth place for the 200 at 22.82, as Kentwood’s Jermaine Brown won in 21.97.

Washington was seventh for the long jump at 18 feet, 11 inches. Brown won the event with a jump of 21-7.

Jamari Lewis was ninth for the javelin with a throw of 120-8. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Elio Bejaran threw 151-7 to win.

McLean Burns was 12th for the 1,600 at 7:35, as St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Blake Verdigets won in 5:07.

In the girls, Gabrielle Wiggins was fifth in the long jump at 14-2. Slaughter Community Charter’s Victoria Alders won at 15-6.
