Varnado’s Washington qualifies for regionals in 3 events

Varnado’s Zamoriyon Washington, McLean Burns, Jamari Lewis and the school’s 4×100 relay team are headed to regionals after reaching that point in the District 10-1A Meet at Tad Gormley Stadium in New Orleans on Wednesday.
Washington is headed to regionals in the 100 meters, 200 and the long jump.
Washington was second in all three events. He ran the 100 in 10.91 seconds, the 200 in 22.50 and he long jumped 21 feet, 0.5 inches. Teammate Travion Beene was eighth in the 200 and ninth in the 100. He ran the 200 in 25.20 and the 100 in 12.17. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Harlem Berry won all three events, 100 in 10.98 and the 200 in 22.12 and the long jump at 22-1.
Varnado’s 4×100 relay team came in third place with a time of 47.13. The group included Jamari Lewis, Chase Lewis, Beene and Washington. St. Martin’s Episcopal won in 44.86.
Burns is headed to regionals in the 1,600 after coming in fourth place with a time of 7 minutes, 3 seconds. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Blake Verdigets won in 5:37.
Lewis was fourth for the javelin with a throw of 127-6. St. Martin’s Episcopal’s Elio Bejaran won at 162-1.
Wednesday’s meet was a qualifier. The top four from each event are headed to regionals. Regionals take place on April 25 at Ponchatoula.
