Franklinton’s girls soccer team was defeated by St. Michael the Archangel, 14-0, in the bi-district round of the Division III state playoffs on Wednesday in a road contest.
Franklinton had 3 seniors this year that included Brooklyn (BK) Pedersen, Tayte Landry and Masia Singleton.
“BK was an absolute pleasure to coach,” Franklinton coach Matthew Hughes said. “She was a great competitor, had an awesome sense of humor, and meant a lot to our program. BK’s dream was always to score a goal before the end of her high school career. She ended up scoring two this year, so that was really cool to see.
Hughes said that Landry had played recreational soccer as a kid, but never played in high school until she was a senior.
“She was the most improved player on our team this year,” Hughes said. “She was very unsure of herself when she first came out, but never gave up and continued to improve every day. Tayte is involved in a ton of extracurriculars, so watching her balance all of that so beautifully and challenge herself in new ways has been very rewarding for (Assistant) Coach (Jonathan) Barber and I.”
Hughes said that Singleton is quiet by nature, but she clearly enjoyed playing soccer.
“What I will always remember about her is that she was committed,” Hughes said. “She hardly ever missed anything. She was there for almost every practice, game, and/or team event of any kind. In an age when accountability is often lacking, Masia’s reliability was a great example for our younger girls.”
Hughes said that he is proud of this team.
“I truly love each and every one of those girls, and I am passionate about providing them the very best opportunity I can,” Hughes said. “Coach Barber and I share a passion and a vision for this program and these kids. We are far from finished. There are bright days ahead for Lady Demons Soccer.”
No. 30 Franklinton posted a 7-10 record.
Third-seeded St. Michael the Archangel (11-7-3), a 2022 state semifinalist, will play either No. 14 Cecilia (10-5-3) or No. 19 Ursuline Academy (10-9-3). That game was Feb. 3.
