Verba Jean Cargill, 87, passed away Jan. 18, 2023 in the home of her niece, Cynthia Hansen (husband, Roger, and great-nephew, Raven) in Gahanna, Ohio. She had recently moved after having lived in Pine, La. for over 35 years. 

Jean was an active member of the ESM United Methodist church in Bogalusa, La. where she was in the choir and a board member. She was a retired realtor, having co-owned Moon Realty in Gretna, La. and later working for Knight’s Realty in Bogalusa, La. In 1949 Jean was the recipient of the West Virginia Golden Horseshoe award for her knowledge of West Virginia History. 

While Jean had no children of her own, she was known as Momma Jean and Maw Maw Jean to a large group of family and friends and loved to cook and entertain them at her home. 

She was preceded in death by her father Norman Evans, mother Muriel Belcher Elder, brother Ray Evans, sisters Aileen Panrell and Margaret Sampson, sister-in law Phyllis Evans, husband JD Cargill, husband Anthony Taravella, her ex-husband and later friend LR Holland, and partner John Parsons. 

Jean is survived by two brothers, William Evans and Lee Evans; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews; her late husband JD Cargill’s children, Deborah Cargill and Daniel Cargill; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her friend of 60 years, Peggy West; and many other long-time friends. 

She will be interned at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parkersburg, W.Va. next to family. 

A Memorial Service will be held for Jean on Monday, March 27, 2023 at the ESM United Methodist Church in Bogalusa, La. at 11 a.m.  Reverend Bill Moon officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the ESM United Methodist Church in Jean’s name.
