Tulane came back from a 45-30 deficit, scoring 16 unanswered points in the final 4:23 to capture a 46-45 victory over the University of Southern California in the 2023 Cotton Bowl that was held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Down 45-30, Tulane pulled within eight when Tyjae Spears ran in from the 4 to make it 45-37 after Valentino Ambrosio made the extra point.
The ensuing kickoff was fumbled out of bounds at the 2 by USC. On second down, Tulane’s defense came up big, tackling a ball carrier in the end zone for a safety to make it 45-39 with 3:13 left.
Tulane started their winning drive at their own 34 and went 66 yards ending in a Michael Pratt connecting with Alex Bauman on a 6-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with nine seconds left. Ambrosio put Tulane in front 46-45 with the extra point.
USC started the next drive at its 11 with seven seconds left. The first down pass was incomplete. Then USC tried a series of laterals that netted two yards as time expired and Tulane celebrated the Cotton Bowl win.
One player for Tulane is Bogalusa resident in 2022 Pope John Paul graduate and freshman George Arata.
This season, Arata had limited carries, going for 12 yards on three carries.
Tulane went 12-2 overall this year after a 2-10 season in 2021. Tulane captured the AAC Conference with a 45-28 victory over the University of Central Florida in the title game.
