Lady Demons Soccer defeated Salmen on Tuesday night by a score of 5-2 at home.

The Lady Demons were led by Mercedes Lopez, who scored four goals in an outstanding individual performance. Kaylee Ard added a goal as well and Susan Bradford contributed to the victory with nine saves at the keeper position.

“I am proud of the victory, but I told the girls that I was not happy with the way we finished the game,” Franklinton coach Matthew Hughes said. “It was a bit humid and I felt as though some fatigue set in relatively early. If we want to be a great team, we have to learn to battle through that fatigue and maintain our discipline. We didn’t quite do that at the level I would like. Still, it is much easier to correct those things after a win, so I am happy that our girls took care of business.”

Hughes said that Lopez obviously had an outstanding performance.

“Kaylee Ard and Madysen Varnado both hit several good balls that just didn’t quite go. I thought we possessed the ball well offensively in the first half,” Hughes said. “We got sloppy in the second half with our touches and movement off the ball. Defensively, we are starting to gain an understanding of shifts, but I’d like to see us slow down counter-attacks more effectively.”

Hughes said they have to find a way to win first touch on set pieces.

“We still aren’t doing that consistently enough,” Hughes said. “The overwhelmingly positive thing is that our girls are finding a way to be successful in spite of all of that. They are only going to get better as the year goes along.”

The Lady Demons will be back in action on Thursday against Hammond at home. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
