Franklinton’s Lady Demons Soccer defeated International High School of New Orleans 6-0 on Tuesday night and was defeated by Covington, 6-1 on Monday.
Against International on the road, the Lady Demons were led in scoring by Madysen Varnado with two goals, Mercedes Lopez with two goals, as well as Kaylee Ard and Morgan Varnado who added one goal each.
Keeper Susan Bradford added four saves in the victory after a 17-save performance against Covington High School.
The Lady Demons’ record is now 1-1 on the season.
“It is always good to get that first win of the season out of the way,” Franklinton coach Matthew Hughes said about the game against International. “We are in the process of building something here, and that doesn’t happen overnight. Our vision is to build a program that can attain and sustain success both on and off the field, and our girls worked incredibly hard toward that goal this off-season. I am very proud of them.”
Hughes talked about the win.
“We possessed the ball well offensively,” Hughes said. “We concentrated on our movement, both on and off the ball, extensively this off-season. We have tried to create an understanding of systematic play within our girls, and I think we have generally succeeded in doing so. Coach (Jonathan) Barber has done an incredible job with the front four.”
Hughes said the team has plenty of room for improvement.
“I thought in our loss at Covington on Monday, the girls played their hearts out. Effort was not the issue. It was simply our first game and it took us a while to adjust to seeing the whole picture at game speed. That is impossible to simulate at practice. Our traps and first-touches have to be much cleaner, our back three has to consistently shift as a unit to avoid getting split and our decision-making on the ball has to speed up a bit. We will get there. Coach Barber and I have a lot of confidence in these girls and love coaching them.”
In Monday’s game, Morgan Varnado scored a goal for Franklinton.
Franklinton’s next game will be on Dec. 6 against Salmen at home.
