Bowling Green School was defeated by Carroll Academy, 28-14, in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs on the road Friday.

No. 10 seed Bowling Green went 4-7, including playoffs.

“I thought we had a great year for the schedule we played and where we were last year,” Bowling Green School coach Phill Junkins said. “We played the toughest schedule in 4A. There were only two teams on our schedule that did not make the playoffs in their respective divisions. We played a defending state champion (Tri-County Academy) and two semifinal teams (Centreville Academy and Oak Forest Academy). We were doing that in a situation where we are definitely in rebuilding mode.”

Junkins spoke highly of his seniors.

“I’m extremely proud of our seniors that stuck it out with us. As we begin this turnaround, we will look back at this group as the group that helped us begin the change,” Junkins said. “Across the offensive line, McCauley Keaton, Eli Schilling and Jacob Matherne were great for us. Josiah Miller, Kyron Cowart, Morgan Verret and Deviun Bickham were just — there’s not enough words — they ran the ball effectively and played solid defense. When Maverick McElveen got hurt, that did hurt us, but he was there and kept coming. He was a great teammate and that showed a lot to the younger teammates. The nice thing about moving forward is that we will return 9-of-11 on defense, so that’s a great starting spot for us.”

Coward ran for 132 yards and a touchdown.

Josiah Miller had 105 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Verret rushed for 38 yards.

Maddox Magee threw for 43 yards.

Seventh-seeded Carroll Academy will play second-seeded St. Joseph Catholic School of Greenville. St. Joseph had a bye in the first round. St. Joseph is 8-1
