On Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, Melvin Lowe Sr. (Big Melvin), a native and resident of Franklinton, passed away with family. Melvin was the eldest of nine children born to the late Melton Lowe Sr. and the late Ada Hazel Lowe. Big Melvin was known and loved by many from Franklinton and the surrounding areas. He retired from Avondale Shipyards as a pipefitter for over 40 years. He loved gardening and the outdoors. Melvin Lowe Sr. was a member of Bethel Church of Christ Holiness U.S.A. At an early age, he entered into marriage with Doris Long Lowe, and to this union six children were born. Melvin and Doris were married for 52 years before his passing.

Melvin Lowe Sr. leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Doris Long Lowe; four daughters, Caterria (Billy Ray) Hart of Franklinton, Tamoria Lowe of Franklinton, Kendra (Darrell Fowler) Lowe of Franklinton, and Brianna Lowe of Mandeville; two sons, Melvin Lowe Jr. of Franklinton, and Corey Lowe of Bogalusa; five grandchildren, Arajuana Lowe, Lamarius Lowe, Tresza Lowe, Skylar Lowe and Rivar Lowe, all of Franklinton; two great-granddaughters, Loyalty Magee and Ariyah Lowe; five sisters, Mary Ann Warren of Franklinton, Alma (Fred) Brumfield of New Orleans, Ada Brumfield of New Orleans, Freddie Mae Lowe of Franklinton, and Lisa (Keno) Spurlock of Baker; one brother, Floyd (Annette) Lowe of Franklinton; six sisters-in-law, Lenoria (Rodney) Davis of Franklinton, Evelyn Smith of Franklinton, Bama (Joseph) Wilson of Spokane, Wash., Beverly Magee of Franklinton, Pricilla Lowe of Franklinton, and Dorothy Faye Williams of Franklinton; two brothers-in-law, Alvin (Barbara) Long Sr. of New Orleans, and Craig Long of Houston, Texas; two special nephews, La’Roy (Sherry) Burton and Kyrel “Biscuit” Burton, and two special nieces, La’Tia Lowe and Armiyah Burton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melton Lowe Sr. and Ada Hazel Lowe; three brothers, Melton Lowe Jr., Joseph Lowe and Marvin Lowe; and one granddaughter, Ayanni S. Lowe.

Viewing was Friday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., at Bethel Church of Christ Holiness, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Keno Spurlock officiating. Interment was at the Wilson Cemetery.
