Shirley Lucille Varnado, 82, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, in Carriere, Miss. She was born on July 11, 1940, in Lyman, Miss., to Wilburn Carlee Varnado and Iola Virgil Byrd Varnado. Shirley was a member of Bogalusa First Church for most of her life.

She got pleasure from cooking for her family. She loved playing Scrabble with her children and grandchildren (no dictionary allowed). She liked going to auctions, flea markets and thrift stores looking for treasures. She was the family genealogist and passed the torch to her daughter, April. She enjoyed crabbing, hunting and fishing.

Shirley is survived by three daughters, April (William) Bowyer, Sheila (Hughey) Wells and Denise (Trey) Lacey; one son, Joseph (Michelle) Braud; 13 grandchildren, Michael (Natasha) Burch, David Burch, Bryan (Jessica) Burch, Joseph (Rachel) Wells, Cherie (Bill) Wells, Sabrina Wells, Caleb Wells, Dusty (Sarah) Stewart, Shaun (Jessica) Stewart, Clay (Ashley) Stewart, Zach Stewart, Rodney (Keera) Braud and Rhonda Braud; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters, Joyce Joachimi and Virginia Moody; two brothers, Ray Varnado and Leon Varnado; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Wilburn and Iola Varnado; two brothers, Willie Varnado and Richard Varnado; and one sister, Wilma Ann Varnado.

Funeral services were held at Bogalusa First Church on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Travis Houston officiating. Interment followed at Sones Chapel Baptist Church in Carriere. Visitation was held at the church on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. until the service time.
