Bethlehem Baptist Church

Bethlehem Baptist Church and Elder Christopher Matthews has scheduled its 115th church anniversary observation on Sunday, July 31, during the 11 a.m. worship services. The theme for the event is, “A Solid Church on a Solid Rock,” and the scripture is Matthew 16:18. The guest minister will be the Rev. Dr. Keith Cowart, pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bogalusa. The church is recognized as being a landmark and the oldest African-American church in our city, after its founding on June 12, 1907. The church was originally located in the old Mill Quarters on Avenue T on land donated by the Great Southern Lumber Company. On Dec. 16, 2012, the church, located on its current site at 837 E. Seventh St., was destroyed by fire. The faith of the Bethlehem family remained strong and, in the tradition, the church was re-dedicated on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015. Pastor Matthews invites everyone to attend this historical service.
