American Legion bingo

Bingo is every Thursday at the American Legion. Doors open at 5 p.m. Great food. All jackpots pay out 100 percent, including the $1,000 blackout.

Edward Quinn book signings

There will be two book signings honoring Edward Quinn, who lived in Bogalusa from 1906-1948. He was a top jazz musician, specializing in finger-style jazz guitar. The books will be about his life. The first signing will be Thursday, June 16, at 3 p.m. at the Old Mint in New Orleans, located at 400 Esplanade Ave. The second signing will be Friday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at the Northshore Vineyard Church in Covington, located at 525 E. Boston St. There will be a jazz guitarist there showing off Quinn’s style, in addition to the books for sale.

Watermelon weed management demo

Weed management is one of a multitude of challenges that vegetable growers face. LSU AgCenter weed scientist Dr. Ron Strahan and research associate David Sexton have applied different herbicide treatments to plots in Perry Talley’s watermelon field in the Rio community of Washington Parish to demonstrate their comparative effectiveness. A demonstration of the results of these treatments will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 16. Those who would like to view these plots and discuss watermelon weed management are welcome to attend. If you plan to come, please contact horticulture agent Dr. Mary Helen Ferguson (mhferguson@agcenter.lsu.edu or 985-277-1850) for directions to the field or for accommodations for persons with disabilities. The LSU AgCenter and LSU provide equal opportunities in programs and employment. Note that Talley’s farm is wholesale only and does not offer watermelon sales to individuals.

PAL support group

A PAL (Parents of Addicted Loved ones) support group will begin Friday, June 17, at Varnado United Methodist Church, located at 25651 Washington St. in Varnado. The meetings will then be held every Friday from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. PAL is a support group for parents and others who are in a relationship with someone who is an addict. Participants must be 18 or older to attend.

Civil War re-enactors at museum

The Tiger Rifles Unit of the Washington Rifles Camp 2211 will be setting up an encampment on the grounds of the Varnado Store Museum on Saturday, June 25. They will display a tent with the materials that would have been used by Confederate soldiers through the 1880s. There will be a Howitzer cannon on site. The re-enactors will spend the day in and around the museum to talk with visitors about what they do. Billy Watts Jr., camp adjutant, invites everyone to come by anytime that day to share in this event.

Gerald family reunion

The 2022 Gerald Family Reunion has been set for Saturday, June 25, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Pine Masonic Lodge. Please bring a covered dish and old family photos to share.

Housing resource fair

The sixth annual Housing Resource Fair will be held Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the ESM United Methodist Church’s Family Life Center, located at 510 Ave. B in Bogalusa. This is a free event. Some of the information that will be released includes: Learning how to become a first-time homeowner. Determining eligibility and applying for the homes that are being built for low-to-moderate income families. Learning how to obtain a clear title on heir property. Meeting with lenders and real estate agents. Learning about “4 to 1” match savings accounts.

Redmond Heights/Oakhill reunion

It’s time for a Redmond Heights Housing Projects and Oakhill Housing Projects Reunion. (Canceled in 2016 due to Mrs. Sampson’s medical condition) A time to gather nieces, nephews, grandparents and all members of a family. A time where everyone sees each other to catch up on what’s happened since you’ve visited last. Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship

The Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship Award was started to honor the life and legacy of the late McClurie Sampson of Bogalusa, the late David Riggins of Vinton, and all past presidents and members of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus Association. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist first- and second-year undergraduate students across the state defray some of the cost of tuition for college and/or community college. Scholarship awardees are also asked to participate in public engagement events with local leaders. All applications must be electronically submitted to wilkatgda@gmail.com by midnight on or before July 25. Requirements are as follows: Eligible applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50. Applicants must be a first- or second-year undergraduate student in good standing. If an applicant is a first-year student, a letter of acceptance must be attached to the application from the school of his or her choice. The institution of higher learning must be in Louisiana. Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on a current event topic within their respective community, and further express in writing what steps they will take to improve their community upon completion of college. All applications must list the name of the LMBC-LEO Mayor or Council member that recommended them. Member/municipalities must be in good standing with LMBC-LEO, and only one submission is allowed per municipality/organization. Each submission subject line should read “2022-23 Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship” and also include the applicant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and a copy of the institution of higher learning’s acceptance letter.

Fair poster contest

The Washington Parish Fair Association invites Washington Parish artists to participate in the 2022 Fair Poster Contest. The entry deadline is Friday, July 29. Rules for poster entry are as follows: Entrants must be Washington Parish residents (or native college students) and at least 18 years old. The design should be 16 by 20 inches and not exceed 18 by 24 inches (portrait/vertical) on mat board, illustration board, canvas or heavy paper. Format is up to the artist. The poster design may contain “Washington Parish Fair 2022,” or the printer can add appropriate lettering digitally. Include a small sketch to indicate letter design and placement. The design may pertain to the Fair in general or to a specific part of the Fair. It must be non-commercial (not used for any other purposes such as T-shirts, cups, etc.). If an identifiable person is used, a letter of release to all publication rights and royalties must accompany the design. The theme for this year’s fair is “All Roads Lead to the Fair.” The poster can follow the theme and include the theme name but is not required. Individuals may enter more than one design. Previous entries may be considered. Each entrant must sign a release of rights and royalties of publication. Entries will be released back to the artist after the 2022 Fair concludes. The poster will not be included in the 2022 fair catalog. Poster designs can be entered from now until Friday, July 29, at Hancock Whitney in Franklinton or Bogalusa. The Open Road Cruisers monthly “Cruise-In” will be held the second Thursday night of each month, from March through August, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the parking lot of Zesto’s Drive-In, located at 100 Richmond St. in Bogalusa.
