The Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship Award was started to honor the life and legacy of the late McClurie Sampson of Bogalusa, the late David Riggins of Vinton, and all past presidents and members of the Louisiana Municipal Black Caucus Association.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist first- and second-year undergraduate students across the state defray some of the cost of tuition for college and/or community college. Scholarship awardees are also asked to participate in public engagement events with local leaders. All applications must be electronically submitted to wilkatgda@gmail.com by midnight on or before Monday, July 25.

Requirements are as follows:

• Eligible applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.50.
• Applicants must be a first- or second-year undergraduate student in good standing. If an applicant is a first-year student, a letter of acceptance must be attached to the application from the school of his or her choice.
• The institution of higher learning must be in Louisiana.
• Applicants must submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on a current event topic within their respective community, and further express in writing what steps they will take to improve their community upon completion of college.
• All applications must list the name of the LMBC-LEO Mayor or Council member that recommended them. Member/municipalities must be in good standing with LMBC-LEO, and only one submission is allowed per municipality/organization.

Each submission subject line should read “2022-23 Riggins/Sampson Memorial Scholarship” and also include the applicant’s name, address, phone number, email address, and a copy of the institution of higher learning’s acceptance letter.
