Bowling Green School has named Eddie Miller its new athletic director.

“I’m very excited about taking the new job,” Miller said. “I’ve been associated with the MAIS for 19 years. This will be the second time I’ve been the athletic director, but first since I got my masters in coaching and sports administration.”

Miller earned his masters from Concordia University in Irvine, Calif.

Miller has coached and taught for the last nine years. He got out of education for 13 years for business and management before getting back in it.

He was at Columbia Academy this past year. Prior to that, he was at Oak Forest Academy for five years, and before that, Amite School Center for three years.

Before Miller went into business, he was at Centreville Academy for six years and Humphries for three.

In his career, Miller has coached football, basketball, track and golf.

He will be teaching a life skills class.

Miller talked about what got him to Bowling Green.

“I have a working relationship with (Bowling Green principal) Phill Junkins, but the main thing was to move up and be the AD (athletic director),” Miller said. “I’ve gone about as far as I could go with being a coach and a teacher. This gives me the opportunity to go into administration in sports. I’ve been through the MAIS Leadership Institute. When coach Junkins and I were at Oak Forest, we had the same vision. We were never in the athletic director positions. I did my undergrad at USM and coach Junkins got his masters in the same program. I’m looking forward to working at Bowling Green because I think they’re on the upswing. I think coach Junkins has some momentum going and I want to help them become a very successful athletic program.”

Miller said the MAIS Leadership Institute is a two-year program where you take classes in Independent School Courses. Miller said they show how to budget and different liabilities. He said it is geared more toward independent schools.

Miller graduated from Parklane Academy in 1985. At Parklane, Miller played basketball and was a manager for football.

In college, Miller was a football manager at Southwest Mississippi Community College his two years there. After that, he went to the University of Southern Mississippi for three years. At USM, Miller was a football manager his second year and a basketball manager his third year.

Bowling Green principal Phill Junkins talked about Miller.

“Eddie brings a tremendous amount of experience to our staff,” Junkins said. “His role as athletic director will be vital to the continued growth of our programs and his ability to coach basketball is incredible. We look forward to him teaching our younger ones and preparing them for varsity.”
