Tax votes approved

Voters in the city of Bogalusa overwhelmingly approved two tax renewals in Saturday’s emergency municipal election.

The election allowed the voters to decide whether to renew the city’s property tax of 5 mills for the Choctaw Landfill and the city’s sales tax of a quarter percent for wastewater.

Unofficial results from the Louisiana State Secretary of State’s office showed that both renewals passed easily.

The property tax renewal was approved, with 523 voting in favor (85 percent) and 90 voting against. The sales tax renewal was also approved, with 529 voting in favor (86) percent and 84 voting against.

Both taxes were renewed for a period of 10 years.

According to the unofficial results, turnout was 9.3 percent among eligible voters in the 15 city precincts.
