Varnado’s Washington, Bickham capture District 9-2A titles

Varnado’s Zamoriyon Washington and Quovadis Bickham won a District 9-2A title in an event each and other qualified for regionals at the league’s meet that was held on Monday, April 18 at Ponchatoula.

Washington was victorious in the 100 meters and Bickham topped the long jump.

Washington won the 100 in 11.60 seconds.

Pine’s Averyon Wiley was fifth in 13.20.

Bickham won the district title in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 1 inch.

Teammate Devonte Magee was fourth at 19-0. Pine’s Wiley and Thomas Benard were fifth and sixth at 18-9 and 18-6.

Monday’s meet was a qualifier. The top four finishers from each event made it to regionals. The Region 3-2A meet will take place on Wednesday at Tad Gormley Stadium.

Several more locals are headed to regionals.

Pine’s Samuel Magee along with Varnado’s Washington and Jamari Lewis were third in events.

Magee came in third place in both hurdle events, running the 110s in 19.68 and the 300 in 51.41. Varnado’s Magee was fourth in the 110s with a time of 23.94. Moore won the 110s in 17.47, while teammate Ja’Marcus Norman topped the 300s in 46.81.

Washington was third in the 200 with a time of 24.07. Pine’s Benard and Zack Thomas ran fifth and ninth at 25.41 and 26.99. Amite’s Rochelle Harrell ran a 23.58 to win.

Lewis was third in the javelin with a throw of 112-10. Thomas and Varnado’s McLean Burris were fourth and sixth with distances of 104-9 and 77-3. Moore won at 120-5.

Besides the athletes mentioned, several more locals were fourth that included Pine’s 4×200 relay team, Pine’s Kirby Martin and Varnado’s Bickham.

Martin was fourth in the 800 after running it in 2:33. Teammate Albert Caillouet was fifth. St. Helena College and Career Academy’s Johnel Cousain won in 2:21.

Pine’s 4×200 relay team ran in 1:41. The team included Russlyn Creel, Thomas, Benard and Magee. Kentwood topped the event in 1:33.

Bickham was fourth in the high jump after clearing the bar at 5-4. Kentwood’s Jer’micheal Carter won at 5-8.

Bickham came in third for the triple jump at 38-9.5 and teammate Magee was fifth at 37-4. Carter won the event at 48-8.5.

Pine’s Thomas and Creel along with Varnado’s Burns were fifth through seventh in the 400 with times of 1:03, 1:08 and 1:18. Harrell won in 52.86.
