The Ragin’ Cajuns scored two in the bottom of the 10th inning Tuesday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park for a 6-5 win, wiping out a rally by the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team that forced extra innings and a short-lived lead.

SLU (2-2) spent the entire game grinding away at an early, 2-0 lead by the Ragin’ Cajuns (3-1).

The Lions cut the deficit in half with a third-inning run on a Shea Thomas bases-loaded single, but the Ragin’ Cajuns tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to go back up by multiple runs.

Southeastern pulled back within a run in the sixth. Reliever Chip Menard hit Bryce Grizzaffi with a one-out pitch. He scored one batter later when Christian Garcia followed up the hit batter with a triple to right-center field. Garcia then scored from third on an errant pickoff attempt by the catcher.

Relievers Trey Harrington and Gage Trahan shut down the Ragin’ Cajun bats, tossing four shutout innings combined. Both pitchers struck out a pair of batters each.

In the ninth, the Lions got a pair of clutch two-out hits to tie the game. Tyler Finke ripped a triple into the left-field corner and scored two pitches later when Preston Faulkner pulled a double inside the third-base bag.

SLU took the lead in the 10th, but could not hold on. Grizzaffi led off with a single through the right side and was sacrificed to second. After he advanced to third on a ground out, Rhett Rosevear was hit by a two-out pitch. Ragin’ Cajun reliever Jake Hammond then issued back-to-back walks to Jake Johnson and Evan Keller, forcing in Grizzaffi with the go-ahead run.

The Ragin’ Cajuns greeted reliever Andrew Landry with back-to-back hits, putting the tying run at third base. It scored on a fielder’s choice groundout as SLU attempted to turn a double play. The next batter followed with a double to straight-away center field to drive in the winning run from first base.

Hammond (1-0) earned the win despite allowing one run, the previous go-ahead run, in 1.1 innings of relief work. Landry (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up two runs on three hits in 0.1 innings pitched.

Seven of the Lions’ nine hitters in the starting lineup picked up a hit in the game.
