Gabe Montenegro drove in two runs and Southern Miss scored in four different innings to defeat North Alabama for the second-straight day, winning 7-3 at Pete Taylor Park Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles jumped out in the first inning for the second consecutive day as Christopher Sargent knocked in Dustin Dickerson for the game’s first run.
On inning later, Montenegro’s two-run single extended the home squad lead to 3-0 as they added another run in the inning on a run-scoring single by Dickerson.
Slade Wilks’ groundout in the third began a two-run frame as Rodrigo Montenegro added a run-scoring infield single as well to make the score 5-0.
The Lions took advantage of four Golden Eagle errors in the fourth to get two runs back and then added a third run in the seventh on a run-scoring single from Reid Homan, but Southern Miss added an insurance run in the eighth as Carson Paetow doubled down the rightfield line and scored three batters later on a Lion throwing error.
In his first start of his Golden Eagle career, senior Hunter Riggins registered his first victory by allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Drew Boyd gave up a run on three hits and a walk with three stirkeouts, while Tanner Hall hurled a scoreless ninth.
