The Southern Miss men’s golf team opens its spring season Monday with the 54-hole Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course in Mobile, Ala.

Teams will begin the 14-team event in an 8 a.m. shotgun start and play 36 holes continuously, before finishing the event with another single round on Tuesday.

“We are excited to get the season started,” said Southern Miss coach Eddie Brescher. “Our guys have been working really hard and ready to go. We always start the spring with this event so most of our guys have seen the course. Looking to hopefully capitalize on that advantage.”

Southern Miss holds a No. 77 spot in the Feb. 6 rankings of GolfWeek.com and is part of a field that features four teams in the Top 50 and eight in the Top 100.

Along with the Golden Eagles, No. 18 Illinois, No. 32 Kent State, No. 41 Florida State, No. 42 UAB, No. 64 Memphis, No. 76 Kansas State and No. 81 Toledo, along with Davidson, Louisiana, Miami (Ohio), host South Alabama, Texas State and WKU round out the field.

The Golden Eagles look to utilize the lineup of senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.), senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.), sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario), sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon (Bangkok, Thailand) and sophomore Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ontario) in the tournament.

“Spring qualifying went well and really showed off the depth we have on this team,” said Brescher. “We were able to mix up our qualifying locations to simulate some good tournament pressure. It’s really good to see some low numbers in qualifying as we begin are spring campaign.”

During the fall, Southern Miss enjoyed a pair of Top 3 finishes in five tournaments, including a second-place showing in the Old Town Club Collegiate in Winston-Salem, N.C., and a third-place showing in the Jim Rivers Collegiate in Choudrant, La.
