The No. 22 Pearl River men’s basketball team hit the road on Thursday night to take on Jones College and knocked off the Bobcats, 68-64. The win was Pearl River’s seventh straight victory over Jones.

“We had a 14-point lead in the first half but made some blunders that allowed them to get back into the game,” head coach Chris Oney said. “Thankfully, in the end, we were able to get the stops we needed to. I think we played well overall.”

FIRST HALF

Ankerion Gross (Sardis; North Panola) opened the scoring in first drilling a 3-pointer to grab Pearl River (16-2 Overall; 11-0 MACCC) an early 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats pushed things out to a 7-2 lead which forced an early Jones College (13-5; 5-5) timeout.

Shortly after, Dylan Brumfield (Hattiesburg; Oak Grove) nailed another 3-pointer, extending the lead 10-2 in favor of the Wildcats.

After Jones grabbed a point from the free-throw line, Gross nailed another 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 13-3.

The teams traded blows from there, with the Wildcats getting yet another 3-pointer from Gross, keeping PRCC on top, 22-12.

Jones went on a run late but Pearl River kept the lead going into halftime, 33-25.

SECOND HALF

Out of the half, Jones College took the lead with a jumper to go ahead 40-39.

Right after, Gross responded with yet another 3-pointer, helping the Wildcats reclaim the lead 42-40.

The teams again traded blows with multiple lead changes throughout a majority of the second half, eventually drawing even at 53-53.

Pearl River found momentum late and rode it to victory by a score of 68-64.
