Southern Miss rising sophomore Ilana Izquierdo has enjoyed time participating with the Colombia U-20 National Team this month following a successful freshman campaign with the Golden Eagles last fall.

Izquierdo earned a spot among players who are currently working through a microcycle prior to the South American Championship that will take place in Chile, April 6-24. The first and second place teams from that event qualify for the 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup in August, set to take place in Costa Rica.

The training, which started Jan. 18, runs until this Friday, Jan. 29.

Izquierdo, from Cali, Colombia, enjoyed a successful debut season in which she was one of three players to start in all 17 matches for the Golden Eagles.

Her statistics included a team-high seven goals to go along with seven assists, giving her a team-best 21 points for the year.

Southern Miss finished the year 10-4-3 and reached its second Conference USA championship final in its history, before falling to Old Dominion 1-0 in the league final.

Izquierdo, who earned second-team all-South region, became the first Golden Eagle to be named C-USA Freshman of the Year in one of the most spectacular rookie seasons. She finished the season leading all Conference USA freshman in every offensive statistical category.
