The Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team returns home for a pair of Southland contests against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday night at 8 p.m. and UIW Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the University Center.

SLU (10-10, 2-1 Southland), unbeaten at home this season at 5-0, enters Thursday’s contest winners of six out of its last seven games, including a 101-93 win over Southland preseason favorite Nicholls on the road last Saturday. The Lions shot 63.3 percent for the game on 31-for-49 shooting, including 17 three-pointers, on their way to the win.

The Lions have done much of their damage offensively from behind the three-point line this season as they lead the Southland shooting 36.3 percent from long range. Southeastern also ranks 16th in the country in made three-pointers with a league-high 192.

Southeastern will look to ride the hot hand of Ryan Burkhardt. The North Florida transfer is shooting 59.5 percent (25-for-42) from three-point range in six games against Southland opponents this season.

Jalyn Hinton continues to be an all-around producer for SLU. The Lions’ forward is averaging 12.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while leading the Southland in blocked shots with 43 (9th in the country). The Boston, Massachusetts native is also second on the team in assists with 50.

The Islanders (15-5 2-1), under first year head coach Steve Lutz, come into Thursday’s game with the Southland’s top-ranked defense. A&M-Corpus Christi is allowing just 67.6 points per game while holding opponents to 41.8 percent shooting.

A&M-Corpus Christi is led by Issac Mushila, averaging 15.2 points and 9.4 rebounds (leads Southland). Mushila recorded a pair of double-doubles last week scoring 18 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in a win over McNeese. He also scored 22 points and snatched 17 rebounds in a loss to Houston Baptist.

The Islanders lead the all-time series over SLU, 11-8. However, the Lions have won five straight against A&M-Corpus Christi with their last loss coming on Jan. 21, 2018, 67-54 at home.

Following Thursday’s game, the Lions will welcome UIW (4-16, 0-3 Southland) to the University Center for a 3 p.m. matchup Saturday. Southeastern and UIW haven’t faced off since Feb. 8, 2020, when the Cardinals edged the Lions, 82-75, in overtime.

The Cardinals have four players averaging double figures in scoring led by R.J. Glasper (14.2), Johnny Hughes, III (11.8), Josh Morgan (11.4) and Drew Lutz (10.2). UIW also leads the league in free throw percentage shooting 76.7 percent from the stripe as a team.

The Lions lead the all-times series over the Cardinals, 5-2, with SLU winning three out four in Hammond.
