It’s time to celebrate in Poplarville. Fans are invited to attend Pearl River’s home women’s basketball game against rival Jones College on Feb. 3 to help honor the school’s newest national champions.

Fresh off claiming the school’s first UCA National Championship, the PRCC cheer squad will be honored at halftime of the annual “Cat Fight” inside Marvin R. White Coliseum. Opening tip between PRCC and JC is at 6 p.m.

“Coach Smith has proven herself in a short time to be an elite coach and now she adds National Champion to her credentials. This is a huge accomplishment for our institution, community and her team,” Pearl River Athletics Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Scotty Fletcher said. “This is a direct reflection of her girls buying in and doing the small things right each and every day. Anybody can do something one time, but to master your routine and perform at your best on the national stage is why they are very deserving of this honor.

“This team will always be remembered as winning the first UCA National Championship and they will continue to serve as great role models in our community and throughout our state. This national championship will allow Coach Smith to press forward with the growth of her program. It’s a great day to be a Wildcat.”

The Wildcats claimed the All-Girl Open Division Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida, after competing against eight four-year programs. PRCC qualified for the finals with a score of 88.7 and then clinched the title with an 88.65.

“To hear your name called last is the goal and when it happened, the girls went wild. They earned every bit of the accomplishment they felt in that moment,” coach Sarah Smith said. “It felt incredible to hear our named called as National Champions. This team has put in so much hard work, and to win was the ultimate award.”

Smith will be the halftime guest of PRCC’s Voice of the Wildcats, Carey Meitzler, Thursday during PRCC’s home women’s basketball game against Southwest.

All home basketball games start at 6 p.m.
