Lions to play 1st home game in 7 weeks, host Tougaloo College on Wednesday

After seven weeks without a home gamethe Southland Tip-Off Champion Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team will play its first game at the University Center since Nov. 22 when the Lions host Tougaloo College Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with the game sponsored by Chick-Fil-A.

Fans who had tickets to the Dec. 29 home contest with Millsaps, which was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the Millsaps team, will have their tickets honored by the Southeastern Ticket Office. Updated tickets are available for print at the SLU ticket office located at Strawberry Stadium. For more information, contact the ticket office at 985-549-5466.

The Lions (7-9) are 3-1 this season at home but have played 11 straight games (4-7) away from the University Center stretching to 44 days.

SLU played road games at Troy, Southern, Louisville, 11th-ranked Iowa State, Iowa and Florida Gulf Coast while playing five neutral games against Western Michigan, Purdue-Fort Wayne, Houston Baptist, McNeese and Nicholls. During the lengthy road stretch, SLU picked up wins over Troy, HBU, McNeese and Nicholls.

Despite the seven-week home hiatus, SLU exploded last weekend on its way to winning the Southland Tip-Off. The Lions shot 50.9 percent (83-for-163) for the weekend while shooting a robust 40-for-79 (50.9 percent) from three-point range led by Ryan Burkhardt.

Burkhardt, a senior, shot 15-for-20 (75 percent) from behind the three-point line in SLU’s three wins over HBU, McNeese and Nicholls. The North Florida transfer enters Wednesday’s contest second in the Southland in made three-pointers (44) behind Nicholls’ Ty Gordon.

Keon Clergeot, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week, scored 14.6 points and dished out 5.6 assists per game at the Southland Tip-Off. Out of Winter Haven, Florida, Clergeot scored 19 points in the title game against Nicholls on 6-for-14 shooting, along with five assists. The two-time Southland player of the week is currently third in the conference in assists (3.9 apg).

The Lions, as a team, are 15th in the nation in three-pointers made (156) and tied for 20th in assists with 256.

The Bulldogs (11-6) are an NAIA school out of Jackson, Mississippi under eighth year head coach Thomas Billups. Tougaloo comes into Wednesday’s contest winners of seven of their last 10 games.

The Bulldogs are led in scoring by senior Cameron Copeland averaging 13.1 points per game while junior Cameron Woodall is scoring 11.1 per game.
