UTA’s Azore claims Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors

UTA’s David Azore scores in bunches to propel the Mavericks to their first 2-0 start in Sun Belt play since 2016-17 and earn Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors.

Mavericks graduate student guard David Azore averaged 27 points and seven rebounds, while leading UTA to a 2-0 record on the opening weekend of conference play. The Houston, Texas, native scored a season-high 30 points in a 89-87 overtime victory over South Alabama on Thursday, followed by a 24-point showing in a 62-57 win over Troy on Saturday. Azore scored seven of the Mavericks final eight points in the closing 100 seconds to turn a three-point deficit into a five-point win against the Trojans. Behind Azore’s performances, UTA was 1-of-2 programs to go 2-0 on the opening weekend of the Sun Belt Conference season.
