Sun Belt East Division champion App State, which had won each of its six bowl games entering Saturday, fell victim to the high-powered offense of Conference USA East Division champion Western Kentucky, 59-38, in the RoofClaim.com Boca Raton Bowl.

The Mountaineers kept pace with the Hilltoppers throughout the first half, but were outscored 28-14 in the second half as Western Kentucky graduate student quarterback Bailey Zappe became the FBS single-season record holder for passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year graduate student quarterback Chase Brice set a record of his own, becoming App State’s single-season record holder for passing yards with a 317-yard, four-touchdown effort.

Super senior kicker Chandler Staton also established a new program record with his 20th field goal of the season—a 28-yarder that tied the game at 24-24 with 2:55 to play in the second quarter.

Brice connected with four different receivers for touchdowns—sophomore Dashaun Davis, super senior Jalen Virgil, sophomore Christian Wells and super senior Malik Williams.

Junior running back Camerun Peoples rushed for 101 yards to pace the Mountaineer ground game.

Defensively, super senior defensive back Kaiden Smith and senior linebacker T.D. Roof led the App State unit with 10 and seven tackles, respectively.

With the loss, App State concludes the season 10-4. The Mountaineers have accumulated nine-or-more victories in 7-of-8 seasons since joining the FBS ranks.
