The Southeastern Louisiana University men’s basketball team begins a four-game week Monday night when they host Ecclesia College at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

The Lions (2-2) are coming off a 78-61 loss on the road to SMU (3-1) Thursday night. SLU fell behind 48-18 late in the first half before cutting the lead in half, 54-39 with 10 minutes to go in the game but couldn’t get closer. The Lions got a pair of double-doubles from Jalyn Hinton, who scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Gus Okafor with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

SLU enters Monday, after picking up their 300th career on court victory in the University last week, looking to remain unbeaten at home (2-0) in the 2021-22 campaign. In the season’s opening week, the Lions rolled past Southeastern Baptist College and held off a strong effort from Paul Quinn College.

Despite the setback at SMU, the Lions still lead the Southland in free throws made (63), free throw percentage (63-for-79 – 79.7 percent) and rebounding (170 – 42.5 ppg).

Hinton and Okafor lead the Lions in scoring through four games. Hinton, a Florida Southern Transfer, is averaging 12.8 points per game, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 blocks which leads the league. Okafor, a junior out of Baltimore, Maryland is scoring 12.3 points per game and leads the team with 7.3 rebounds a night.

Ecclesia (5-3) is a Division I NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Association) out of Springdale, Arkansas. The Royals have picked up five wins in the early season despite not having a senior on the roster. The team is also compromised of wide spreading recruiting with a roster of 14 players from eight different states.

As for the Lions, following their matchup with the Royals Monday night, they will embark on a weekend road trip to Fort Myers, Florida to play in the Hilton Garden Inn Florida Gulf Coast University Invitational.

SLU will take on Purdue Fort Wayne (2-1) out of the Horizon League Friday night at 3:30 p.m. CT. Saturday, the Lions will face host team Florida Gulf Coast from the Atlantic Sun Conference (1-2) at 6 p.m. CT before wrapping up the weekend Sunday against Western Michigan (1-2) from the Mid-American Conference at 12:30 p.m. CT.
