Louisiana’s Hunt goes viral, 28 Sun Belt alumni compete in NFL week 10

Twenty-eight Sun Belt alumni competed in Week 10 of the National Football League (NFL) season, with 12 in their respective team’s starting lineups.

A pair of Miami Dolphins headlines the Sun Belt’s performances in Week 10. Offensive lineman Robert Hunt out of Louisiana—who has appeared on every offensive snap this season—went viral on what has been called “one of the greatest plays that didn’t count in NFL history.” Wide receiver Albert Wilson out of Georgia State registered a season-high 106 yards of total offense.

Suiting up for the first time since Week 2, Buffalo Bills running back Matt Breida out of Georgia Southern found the end zone on two occassions as part of a 50-yard day—28 rushing and 22 receiving. Fellow running backs J.D. McKissic (Arkansas State, Washington Football Team)—39 yards—and Jerick McKinnon (Georgia Southern, Kansas City Chiefs)—32 yards—also made and impact on the ground and through the air.

San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell out of Louisiana tallied 91 yards on 27 carries, Kansas City Chiefs running back Derrick Gore amassed 19 yards on six rushes and Seattle Seahawks tight end Gerald Everett had 63 yards on eight catches.

Defensively, 11 Sun Belt alumni combined for 31 tackles and a tackle for loss. Louisiana alumnus and Detroit Lions safety Tracy Walker III paced the Sun Belt contingent with seven tackles, while Arkansas State product and New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis had six tackles and a tackle for loss.

Defensive lineman Ronald Blair (App State, New York Jets), defensive back Shemar Jean-Charles (App State, Green Bay Packers), defensive lineman Tarron Jackson (Coastal Carolina, Philadelphia Eagles), defensive back Josh Norman (Coastal Carolina, San Francisco 49ers), wide receiver Penny Hart (Georgia State, Seattle Seahawks), defensive back Chandon Sullivan (Georgia State, Green Bay Packers), defensive lineman Justin Hamilton (Louisiana, Dallas Cowboys), linebacker David Mayo (Texas State, Washington Football Team) and defensive lineman Mario Addison (Troy, Buffalo Bills) added to the Sun Belt’s tackle tally.

Former Georgia Southern kickers Tyler Bass of the Buffalo Bills and Younghoe Koo of the Atlanta Falcons went 2-for-2 on field goals and 6-for-6 on extra points. Denver Broncos punter Sam Martin out of App State registered 212 yards on four punts for a season-high 53.00 yards per punt.

Colby Gossett (App State, Atlanta Falcons), Kendall Lamm (App State, Tennessee Titans), Anthony Chesley (Coastal Carolina, Indianapolis Colts), Kevin Dotson (Louisiana, Pittsburgh Steelers), Aaron Brewer (Texas State, Tennessee Titans) and Ty Nsekhe (Texas State, Dallas Cowboys) also appeared in Week 10.

Forty-nine Sun Belt alumni—representing all 10 football programs—earned NFL roster spots entering the 2021 season, with 33 on active rosters, 10 on 16-man practice squads and two on injured reserve lists during Week 10.
