After leading their teams to conference victories, Texas State’s Tyler Vitt, App State’s Steven Jones and Coastal Carolina’s Alex Spillum claimed this week’s Sun Belt honors.

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Tyler Vitt, Texas State
(Jr., QB – San Antonio, Texas)

Making his second start of the season, Bobcats junior quarterback Tyler Vitt led Texas State to a 27-19 homecoming victory over ULM. The San Antonio, Texas, native completed 16-of-31 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown, while adding 37 yards in the ground game. Vitt threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Javen Banks to take a 10-6 lead with 1:11 to play in the first quarter and the Bobcats never trailed again in the homecoming win.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Steven Jones, App State
(Sr., DB – Rockingham, N.C.)

App State senior defensive back Steven Jones tied a pair of school single-game records with three interceptions and two pick-sixes—which also tied a Sun Belt single-game record. Jones singlehandedly scored as many points on defense as Arkansas State did on offense in the 48-14 Mountaineer win. The Rockingham, N.C., product’s touchdowns came on 47 and 34 yard returns. Jones became the first Mountaineer to score on a pair of pick-sixes since 1983 and now has three interception returns for a touchdown in the last two games—a program and Sun Belt record for an entire season. Jones is the third-straight Mountaineer to be named Sun Belt Football Defensive Player of the Week.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Alex Spillum, Coastal Carolina
(RS Sr., S – Chanhassen, Minn.)

Coastal Carolina redshirt senior safety Alex Spillum blocked his second punt of the season, which led directly to a Chanticleer touchdown to end the first half in a 28-18 win over Georgia Southern. The Chanhassen, Minn., native broke through the right side of the line and blocked the punt, which was scooped up by redshirt freshman linebacker Mason Shelton, who ran it into the end zone from 33 yards out to give Coastal Carolina a 21-0 halftime advantage. On the season, the Chanticleers have blocked four kicks—three punts and one PAT—and have scored a touchdown on 3-of-4 blocked punts this year.
