Varnado’s Wildcats played a close game through halftime, but was defeated by St. Helena College and Career Academy, 39-12, in a District 9-2A road game that was held on Thursday.

Varnado trailed by just one at halftime at 13-12.

“Our kids played hard,” Varnado coach Adam Brumfield said. “It was 13-12 at halftime. We just ran out of gas. We don’t have a lot of depth to start with because our numbers are low this year and we have some injuries, but when some kids choose to go to the fair instead of the game, it puts the other kids in a bind and it’s pretty disappointing. These are the same kids who didn’t come during the summer. It goes back to what we were preaching at the beginning of the year about commitment, dedication and unselfishness. These are things that you need in order to be successful and we have to keep working towards that. I’m proud of my kids that came all week. They performed well (Thursday) night. I don’t have many, but the ones who strapped it on last night are good football players. They are fighters and they played hard.”

Varnado is 2-6 this season and 0-3 in district. St. Helena College and Career Academy goes to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Varnado celebrates homecoming on Friday with a game against Independence.
