Louisiana remained undefeated in conference play, while ULM upset Liberty in the lone non-conference matchup of the week.

In the week’s most-anticipated matchup—a rematch of the first two Sun Belt Football Championship Games and a meeting of 4-1 teams that received votes in this week’s national polls—Louisiana outpaced App State, 41-13, in front of a national television audience on Tuesday night on ESPN2. The win was the Ragin’ Cajuns second-straight over the Mountaineers and moved the club to 15-3 in games played at Cajun Field under head coach Billy Napier.

Louisiana’s defense forced a season-high four turnovers in the victory, while freshman running back Montrell Johnson had the first 100-yard rushing game of the season for the Ragin’ Cajuns with a 103-yard, one-touchdown effort.

South Alabama bested Georgia Southern, 41-14, on Thursday night on ESPNU to earn its first-ever victory over the Eagles and its first conference win of the 2021 campaign. Senior quarterback Jake Bentley completed 24-of-31 attempts for 389 yards, while accounting for five touchdowns for the Jaguars. Both his 389 passing yards and his five touchdowns accounted for were South Alabama program records.

Not to be outdone, junior wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, who accumulated 174 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches, also tied a pair of program records. Tolbert is now tied for the Jaguar career high-water marks with six 100-yard receiving efforts and 16 touchdown receptions.

Troy used a fourth quarter 33-yard interception return touchdown by redshirt freshman safety Keyshawn Swanson to record a 31-28 win over Texas State. Freshman running back Kimani Vidal rushed for 162 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Trojan offense. The victory gives the Trojans back-to-back wins for the first time this season and runs their all-time record against the Bobcats to 11-1.

ULM scored 28 unanswered points in the third quarter and used a career-long 53-yard field goal from senior kicker Calum Sutherland to down Liberty, 31-28. The field goal was the first of 50-or-more yards for the Warhawks since 2014.
