Houston Baptist’s Katie Marker scored in the 34th minute on an assist from Ariana King as the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team lost, 2-1, Sunday at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-7-2, 3-4-2 Southland) scored the match’s opening goal in the fourth minute as Mya Guillory took a pass down the far side from Victoria Brackmann. Guillory, the Prairieville, Louisiana native scored with the left foot from a tough angle 15 yards out for her third goal of the season.

The Huskies (5-8-3, 5-3-2 Southland), however, wasted little time in tying the match. HBU’s Felicia Fernandez scored in the ninth minute, assisted by Noor Abukishk, right in front of the Lady Lions’ net from 10 yards out.

Marker scored the game-winner late in the first half on a cross from King just outside the box. The Lady Lions, however, would not go away quietly.

In the second half, SLU outshot the Huskies 9-3 with their best chance coming in the 79th minute. Sophomore Hailie Yoder took a corner kick from Claire Huston and headed it from eight yards out. The shot nearly snuck into the goal but HBU’s Karla Ramirez made a diving save to turn away Yoder and SLU as the Huskies picked up their first win in four tries against Southeastern.

“It was a tough game,” said fifth year SLU soccer head coach Chris McBride. “Houston Baptist is a good team that has had some really good wins recently. They’re good at defending central and out wide and they did that today so credit to them.”

Both teams finished with 12 shots. HBU had eight shots on goal while the Lady Lions had five. Southeastern had six corner kick opportunities to none for the Huskies.

“I thought overall we created some really good chances,” said McBride. “I felt we moved the ball well and made some good runs from behind the ball as well. But we created the chances we wanted and hopefully we can keep knocking on the door and staying persistent and hopefully the goals will come.”

Guillory led Southeastern with four shots, two on goal. Senior Goalkeeper Nadine Maher added six saves for the Lady Lions. The Huskies were paced by Xya Balderas and Ryan Ford with three shots each while Ramirez finished with four saves.

Following Sunday’s match, SLU senior Megan Gordon was honored by the team as she played her 83rd career match for the Lady Lions becoming the all-time games played leader in program history. Gordon, the Clophill, England native passed former Lady Lions Amber Lasher (2013-16).

“Megan has been a great captain, leader and role model for us,” said McBride. “She does everything she is asked to do on the field and off the field. She’s great in community service, the classroom and in competition and we’re very grateful to have her as part of this program. She’s fought tooth and nail over the last four years and I’m extremely proud of her for it.”

Next up, SLU will continue their six-match homestand Friday night at 7 p.m. against UIW (4-10-1, 4-5-0 Southland) in Strawberry Stadium.  The Lady Lions defeated UIW back on Sept. 26, 2-1, in San Antonio, Texas.
