Jo Ann Carrier Barber Mitchell, 76, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 8, 2021, after a lengthy illness.

She was born May 29, 1945, to parents Gilbert S. and Myrtis Kuhn Carrier. Mrs. Mitchell was a devoted hairdresser for several years, then returned to school for respiratory therapy. She retired after 18 years of service from LSU Bogalusa Medical Center, as a Respiratory Therapist. A music lover, Mrs. Mitchell was a pianist and organist at Pleasant Hill and Edgewood Baptist Churches and also Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church, where she is a member.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by daughter, Teresa Barber Davis and son-in-law John of Ponchatoula; daughter, Pamela Barber Reid, son-in-law and devoted caregiver, Anthony of Bogalusa; grandchildren, Christopher Mizell of Ponchatoula, Justin Brumfield of Sandy Hook, Miss., Jay Reid of Bogalusa, Tyler Davis and his wife, Lindsey of Denham Springs, Sarah Reid of Bogalusa and Hannah Davis Trammel and her husband Will, of Pearl, Miss.; great-grandchildren, Landyn Reid Anderson of Bogalusa and Eleanor Grace Trammel of Pearl. She was also excited about the upcoming birth of two additional great-grandchildren, expected in November and in March. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Carrier Pittman, and brother, Rodney Carrier, both of Bogalusa. Mrs. Mitchell was also survived by stepchildren, Robyn Mitchell Seal (Terry) of Bogalusa, Rikki Mitchell Daley of Gulfport, Miss., and Joshua (Katrina) Mitchell of Bogalusa.

In addition to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carrier, she is preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, John Maxon Mitchell; sisters, Velma Graham, Doris Naretto and Ollie Smith; and brothers, Elbert “Blinker” Carrier, Louis “Chubby” Carrier, Sidney Carrier, Olin “Rozo” Carrier and Gary Carrier.

Funeral services were held at Poole-Ritchie Funeral Home with visitation on Sunday, Oct. 10, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Monday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. until the service time at 2 p.m. Interment followed at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Christopher Mizell, Justin Brumfield, Jay Reid, Tyler Davis, Will Trammel, and nephew, Richard Smith.
