Olivia Draguevich scored her league-leading 10th goal of the season as the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer was edged by Northwestern State 1-0 Sunday at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lady Lions (5-6-2, 3-3-2 Southland) had their eight-match home undefeated streak snapped as they entered Sunday’s contest 6-0-2 at Strawberry Stadium since the beginning of the 2020 season.

Northwestern State (6-4-3, 6-1-1) scored the match’s only goal in the 35th minute when Draguevich rebounded a shot from Kyle Nolen off the crossbar that was deflected by SLU goalkeeper Nadine Maher. Draguevich punched it in the bottom right corner of the net for the goal just past the outstretched arms of Maher.

“Northwestern is a great defensive team and we saw that today,” said SLU head coach Chris McBride. “The goalkeeper (Acelya Aydogmus) and the back line made it very difficult for us to score. I thought the second half we gave ourselves a chance to make a comeback but ultimately, we fell just short.’

The Lady Demons finished the match with nine shots while SLU had three. Maher finished with four saves.

Sunday’s match was the fifth straight regular season victory by Northwestern over Southeastern by the same 1-0 score. However, the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Demons in last year’s Southland Tournament in penalty kicks.

Next up, SLU will play their third straight match at home as they take on Houston Baptist (3-8-3, 3-3-2 Southland) Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1 p.m.
