Varnado’s Wildcats were topped by Northeast, 37-36, in a contest that was held on the road Friday.

“It was a good high school football game,” Varnado coach Adam Brumfield said. “We scored to take the lead with 2:19 left in the fourth (quarter), so we needed one more stop to win the game and just couldn’t get it. Our kids played hard and came up just a little short. We have to do a better job of not giving up scores right before the half and at the end of the game if we want to win. It’s tough losing those close ones. It hurts your team morale, but you just have to keep fighting and improving and get ready for next week. Baker is a good 3A football team with a lot of athletes. We will have to be more disciplined, execute and not turn the ball over to win the game.”

Zamoriyon Washington ran for 110 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown along with a catch for 3 yards.

Tyler Whitfield ran 22 times for 100 yards and a score.

Jamari Lewis threw for 70 yards and ran for 5 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Moses ran for 40 yards. He also caught a pass for 7 yards.

Tyriq Bell had 17 yards on the ground.

Quovadis Bickham II caught a pass for 45 yards and a touchdown. Bickham also returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.

Kevonte Peters had a catch for 15.

Varnado will play its home opener on Friday against Baker.

Baker enters with a 1-3 record. They lost to University Lab, 44-0, last week.
