The opening day of the Old Town Collegiate proved to be a historic one for the Southern Miss men’s golf team as they broke three school records over the first 36 holes of the event.

After posting an eight-under par 272 at the par 70, 6,966-yard Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, N.C., the No. 66-ranked Golden Eagles by GolfWeek carded a school-record 269 over the final circuit to also register a school-best, 36-hole total of 19-under-par 541, good for third in the team standings. Southern Miss trails host and No. 46 Wake Forest (532) by nine strokes, and are one stroke behind No. 57 Duke (540).

Senior Brice Wilkinson (Madison, Miss.) put together rounds of 65 and 66 for a school-record 36-hole low 131 total, which places him in a three-way tie for first place. Both Alex Fitzpatrick and Michael Brennan, each from Wake Forest, also scored a nine-under 131 to tie for the individual lead.

Wilkinson ranks as one of three Golden Eagles in the top 15 as senior Hunter Atkins (West Point, Miss.) added rounds of 66 and 68 for a six-under 134 and a tie for sixth. Sophomore Thongpipat Rattanayanon collected a 69 and 67 for a four-under 136 and a 14th-place tie.

Sophomore Robbie Latter (Mississauga, Ontario) recorded rounds of 72 and 68 for an even-par 140 and a 37th-place tie, while freshman Ryan Dupuy (Baton Rouge, La.) holds a 77th-place tie after shooting rounds of 74 and 76 for a 150.

The Golden Eagles, one of eight Top 100 teams in the event, leads No. 70 Penn State (544) by three strokes, No. 48 Virginia Tech (549) by eight strokes, No.83 Kansas State (550) by nine strokes, No. 41 SMU (556) by 15 strokes and No. 98 Kentucky (559) by 18 strokes in the 15-team field.
