On Sept. 20, 2021, Mrs. Sylvia Ann Brooks, 82, went to be with her Lord at Our Lady of the Angels Hospital in Bogalusa.

Sylvia was born in Poplarville, Miss., on Sept. 22, 1938. The sixth of nine children, and a child of the Great Depression, she learned from an early age the value of hard work. This served her well as a single mother to three young boys in Los Angeles, Calif., where she met the love of her life, Edsel “Ed” Brooks, in 1968. After the birth of a fourth son in 1969, the couple moved their blended family to Orange County, Calif., where they enjoyed 10 years on the coast.

In 1978, Ed and Sylvia moved home to Bogalusa, where they enjoyed their lives together until the passing of Ed in 1997. In her later years, Sylvia has enjoyed watching her family grow with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Being surrounded by family and their undying love was her passion, and what got her through these past few years of adversity.

She is survived by three children, Erin (Sue) Sloan, Kevin (Jean) Sloan and Douglas (Crystal) Brooks; nine grandchildren, Alisha (Ken) Allison, Megan Amacker, Cody Amacker, Colleen Sloan, Bradley C. Sloan, Riley Sloan, Jenna Sloan, Kelli (Dustin) Magee and Ashley (Stosch) Powell; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Faye (Robert) Phelps; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members.

Mrs. Brooks was preceded in death by her husband, Edsel Ford Brooks; one son, Charlie Ray Amacker; her parents, Joe and Zena Davis; seven brothers and sisters; and a great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Tannehill.

Brown-McGehee Funeral Home is proudly serving the Brooks family. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Visitation will resume on Monday, Sept. 27, at 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Interment will immediately follow at Crossroads United Pentecostal Church Cemetery.
