Darby Gillette was tabbed Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team, the league office announced Tuesday.

Gillette, a senior, scored the first goal of the match in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Houston Baptist on the road. The Meridian, Mississippi native also played 70 minutes at defender helping the Lady Lions to the shutout win while facing 10 shots.

Gillette is the second Lady Lion to receive the weekly honor this season as sophomore Makenzie Maher was named the Southland Offensive Player of the Week back on Aug. 31.

A Lamar High School grad, Gillette has been a mainstay for the Lady Lions during her career with 54 matches played and 31 starts.

Gillette and SLU will look to ride the momentum into the weekend when they hit the road to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at 7 p.m. and the University of Incarnate Word Sunday at 1 p.m.
