Darby Gillette and Dalton Fish both scored goals in the first half for the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Houston Baptist at Campbell Road Sports Park.

With the victory, the Lady Lions (2-5-0, 1-2-0 Southland) earned their first road and Southland win of the season after several hard fought losses to 27th-ranked Arizona State, UL Lafayette, Northwestern State and McNeese all by one goal.

Gillette, a senior, opened the scoring in the sixth minute of the match. The Meridian, Mississippi native netted the goal on a cross from junior Mya Guillory.

Later in the first half, Fish gave SLU some breathing room in the 35th minute scoring her first career goal on a penalty kick. The attempt was set up by a shot by sophomore Hailie Yoder whose shot resulted in a hand ball by HBU inside the box.

SLU’s defense took over in the second half as they allowed just two shots in the final 45 minutes of the match. The Lady Lions outshot the Huskies, 16-10, for the match on their way to the victory.

But today’s unsung Lady Lions was Claire Huston whose leadership drew praise from SLU head coach Chris McBride.

“After the first two conference games we felt like we were close to positive results,” said McBride. “But the leadership of Claire Huston was really important to today’s victory. She’s one of the most unselfish players I’ve ever coached. She bought into some adjustments we needed to make and her performance led to the  victory.”

Southeastern also featured a balanced offensive attack as 10 different players attempted shots led by freshman Shamoy Campbell with three.

HBU (0-6-2, 0-1-1 Southland) was led by Bryce Reynolds with four shots while Ryan Ford added three.

While the Lady Lions will return to Hammond Thursday night, they will be back on the road next weekend with a pair of matches Friday, Sept. 24 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Sunday, Sept. 26th at UIW. SLU was initially scheduled to play both matches at home but had to reschedule due to Hurricane Ida’s affects on Hammond.
